Is the Norton Password Manager Really Free?
First things first – yes, Norton’s password manager is really free. You can download the app and browser extension, sign up, and start using it right away. We didn’t notice any immediate catch, either. Here’s how it compares to other password managers we tested:
- Unlike Dashlane’s free plan that limits users to 25 saved logins, you can store unlimited passwords in your Norton vault. Our test account currently has over 360 logins.
- Unlike NordPass’ free plan that allows users to open their vault on only one device at a time, Norton allowed us to simultaneously keep our vault unlocked on multiple devices.
- Just like RoboForm’s free plan, Norton lets us save credit card numbers, addresses, and notes in our encrypted vault.

Testing Norton Password Manager’s Core Features
We extensively tested the Norton password manager to see if it’s a workable free option. To do that, we started with the core features:
- Password storage
- Auto-fill and auto-capture
- Password generation
- Password sharing
Password Storage
To populate your Norton vault, you can upload a .csv file containing all your logins. You can also directly import passwords from a limited source of password managers. Browser built-in password managers (Chrome, Safari, etc.), LastPass, and 1Password are all supported, but not other popular applications such as RoboForm and NordPass.
We didn’t think that was going to be an issue. We came from testing NordPass, so we tried to export our NordPass vault content as a .csv file and upload it to Norton. Norton wouldn’t accept it. We had to find a workaround. We uploaded the NordPass file to our Google Password Manager, and then exported it from Google to Norton. It worked, but not as smooth overall as when we reviewed 1Password.

Auto-Fill and Auto-Capture
Next, we tried logging into several websites to test Norton’s auto-fill capabilities. We tested it across 50 websites we frequently use, from banking portals to social media platforms.
Norton correctly filled credentials 94 percent of the time, stumbling only on sites with unusual login forms and multi-page authentication. In such instances, we had to manually click the Norton logo in the username and password fields and select the correct record to fill. It takes an extra two seconds to do so, but the overall experience was about as smooth as when we reviewed Dashlane.
We also tried signing up for new online accounts to see how reliable Norton’s auto-capture is. Out of the 12 new accounts we signed up for, Norton automatically offered to store 11 login credentials. Not bad, but when we tested Total Password, it aced this test with a 12 out of 12 score. So did NordPass and Bitwarden.
Testing Insight: The browser extension worked seamlessly on Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, but we had occasional hiccups on Safari. Password Generation
We used Norton’s password generator when creating those new accounts. It doesn’t offer to generate strong passwords automatically like NordPass does. We had to click the Norton icon in the password field, the three-dot menu, and then Generate Password. From there, we could customize the length and characters for the password. It’s a pretty generic feature (that works similarly to our free password generator) but it’s definitely convenient to have in a browser extension.
Password Sharing
This is the one core feature that the Norton password manager fumbled. Other password managers we tested offer secure sharing options. LastPass lets you encrypt and then share credentials with other LastPass users you trust; NordPass lets you do the same, except you can send it to non-NordPass users and the shared file expires once read. Both those features ensure that you can share passwords without risk of being intercepted.
With Norton, the only way to share logins is to copy the password in plain text, which is not secure. You can use a third-party encrypted messaging app (like WhatsApp or Telegram’s Secret Chat) to share it with the recipient, but it’s not as convenient or secure as an integrated secure password sharing feature.
Expert Tip: Whenever you have to share sensitive information via the web, use a VPN. A VPN adds another layer of encryption, preventing snoops and man-in-the-middle attackers from intercepting the information on the network level.
Norton Password Manager Security Standards
Norton has a solid set of fundamental features for a free password manager, but none of that means anything if it’s not secure. Fortunately, the Norton password manager doesn’t disappoint in that area as well. It uses the standard 256-bit AES encryption (a.k.a. military-grade encryption) to secure its vaults. It’s the same standard used by the U.S. government for classified information.
We also confirmed that Norton has a zero-knowledge architecture. Although your vault content is stored in its servers for efficient cross-device syncing, Norton itself doesn’t have access to your passwords.
Lastly, you can enable two-factor authentication. Instead of simply entering your master password when unlocking the browser extension, it will require you to enter your password via your registered phone. The phone acts as a second authentication method, so even if someone learns your Norton master password, they can’t simply unlock your vault. They’d need physical access to your phone as well.

Our Norton Password Manager User Experience
We found the Norton’s interface refreshingly simple compared to feature-heavy password managers we’ve tested. The browser extension opens to a clean web app dashboard that displays the vault content, but not much else. The left-side panel has shortcut buttons to the Safety Dashboard, settings menu, and the password generator.
The mobile app also deserves special mention. We tested it on both iOS and Android devices. We found the performance and design consistent across both platforms. Biometric login (fingerprint and face scan) worked flawlessly, too. We think that’s great, because biometric authentication provides both convenience and extra security. It’s faster than typing your master password every time.

Cross-Platform Syncing
Individually, the Norton password manager mobile app and browser extension were great, but they also work impressively together. Logins synced instantaneously across multiple devices. For instance, as soon as we finished importing our passwords from Chrome using the Norton browser extension, we opened the Android app, and voila! It didn’t take more than two seconds for all 360+ records to sync.
Working With Other Norton Products
We also like that the Norton password manager app and browser extension are separate from Norton’s antivirus and VPN apps. We like the convenience of one-stop-shop apps, but knowing how comprehensive Norton’s antivirus features are, we feel that adding a password manager to the antivirus would just clutter the interface even more.
Conclusion: Do We Recommend the Norton Password Manager?
Keeping in mind that it’s a free password manager, we’d definitely recommend Norton. We tested it for two months, using it everyday for personal and office use, and we can say that it’s one of the few workable free password managers. It has almost all of the core features, and the one missing function – secure password sharing – is something most people can live without.
The Norton password manager had its ups and downs during our extensive testing period. We experienced occasional hiccups on Safari, and importing passwords didn’t go as smoothly as we had hoped. Those are but minor inconveniences.
On the plus side, we got to use a free password manager made by one of the most trusted names in cybersecurity. Plus, it works great with the Norton 360 all-in-one suite of digital safety and privacy tools. We’re giving the Norton password manager a solid, 8.5 out of 10 SecurityScore rating.
